Welsh MP Ben Lake has pledged to put forward a bill in the House of Commons, according to which dog owners will be liable in cases of attacks by their pets on livestock, the bill also defines a compensation mechanism for injured farmers.
In this way, the deputy joined a public company called "Your dog, your responsibility." She calls for the adoption of laws that recognize damage from dog attacks and determine liability for it. Among others, the Wales Farmers Union (FUW) is participating in the campaign.
Today, according to the FUW, the North Wales police is the only police to record dog attacks on livestock. These numbers show that 89% of all dog attacks on livestock occur when dogs leave home.
“We are very grateful to the North Wales police for recording this data. Previous campaigns focused on dog walking, but the numbers show that the main problem seems to be those running away from the backyard, ”said Dr. Hazel Wright, senior FUW policy officer.
“As long as the current law is in force, little can be done to compensate the farmer for losses or to minimize the likelihood of a repeat offense,” she added.
FUW claims that the only way to deal with dog attacks is to enact laws that act as a “powerful deterrent” for their owners.
