The China Cotton Association is filing on behalf of its members a refusal of import duties on American raw cotton.
This is stated in a statement by the Chinese Cotton Association, posted on its website on Thursday, June 13.
At the end of May of this year, the Ministry of Finance of China published a list of goods, which includes raw cotton, which may be canceled tariffs imposed by China in the framework of the Sino-US trade war in July last year.
China is the main importer of American cotton and the 25% import tariffs introduced last year significantly reduced US-Chinese cotton trade.
In the first half of the 2018-2019 marketing year, from August 2018 to January 2019, China imported only 11 percent of cotton from the United States, compared with 45 percent for the same period in the previous marketing year.
It is unclear whether tariffs will be canceled. Applicants will have to explain the damage caused by the previously introduced tariffs of their industry, as well as prove that there is no alternative to importing goods from the United States.
The matter is complicated by the fact that in addition to the United States, China imports cotton from many other countries, especially these raw materials are purchased in Brazil and Australia.
