Growing cucumbers in a polycarbonate greenhouse allows you to get friendly seedlings, earlier and abundant crops. If the greenhouse shelter is large, then other plants can be planted next to the cucumber bushes. But it is important to consider the fact that not every neighbor can get along with a cucumber without harming its development and fruiting.
Companion plants for cucumbers
Plants growing in the neighborhood influence each other. This effect can be positive or negative. So, for example, with successfully selected plantings, you can achieve an increase in yield of 10–20% or improve the taste of fruits. Therefore, it is important to know which crops have a beneficial effect on cucumbers and which do not, and plan the placement of plants in accordance with this knowledge.
To make it easier for the gardener to take care of greenhouse plantings, it is necessary to plant plants that require the same growing conditions, about the same amount of moisture, and fertilizing. They should not have competition for nutrients.
With the proper organization of beds it is possible to jointly grow cucumber and tomato bushes. Also, with seedlings, you can grow any seedlings
Among the crops that are well suited for growing in the same greenhouse with cucumbers are the following:
- pepper;
- legumes;
- cabbage;
- White cabbage;
- mustard;
- spinach;
- celery;
- eggplant;
- zucchini;
- melons
- watermelons.
- Growing these plants together with cucumber bushes allows you to achieve such positive results:
- save time and place to care;
- get early harvests;
- save energy and heat costs.
Did you know? As a cultivated plant, cucumber began to grow 6 thousand years ago. India and China are considered its homeland, where today you can meet a wild plant whose fruits are not suitable for food due to bitterness.
What crops can not be planted in the same greenhouse with cucumbers
It will not be possible to plant plants with the same greenhouse with cucumbers that are affected by the same diseases and harmful insects, have different requirements for temperature, lighting and humidity, have different preferences in nutrients, and pose a danger of pollination.
Such crops include:
- bow;
- garlic;
- aromatic herbs (cilantro, basil, oregano);
- potatoes;
- radish.

Growing cucumbers and their companions in a greenhouse
In order to successfully grow cucumbers and crops compatible with them, it is necessary to divide the greenhouse into zones, properly prepare the soil, set the required temperature.
Important! The density of planting of cucumber bushes should be observed in accordance with the recommendations — 3 plants per 1 m².
Division of the greenhouse into zones for plants: partitions
The greenhouse should be divided into several zones. For example, depending on the lighting. Given this factor, cucumber bushes should be planted under the end window opening, next to them are beds of pepper, next to them are blue and zucchini. Along the edges to plant cabbage, lettuce, greens.
If there are 3 beds in a greenhouse building, then you can distribute them as follows: in the center arrange cucumbers, on the side beds - peppers, blue, cabbage, between the beds - greens
When planting cucumbers and tomatoes together, it is necessary to equip the partitions between the zones. About neither can be plywood, slate, film, from battens. Wherein it is better to place tomatoes at the exit to be able to often ventilate and maintain the necessary level of humidity. Gentle and heat-loving cucumber bushes will be protected from the cool air by a partition. Between tomatoes and cucumbers, you can place beds with cabbage, peppers, zucchini.
Important! Do not plant tomatoes and eggplant next door. They will negatively affect each other.
Land preparation for landing
It is better to prepare soil in the fall. But if this is not possible, it’s not scary if you start preparing it in the spring. The beds need to be organized high. The first layer is laid drainage 30–50 cm high, then the layer of manure (compost) 30–40 cm high, wood ash (3 st. / M²), nitrofoska (100 g / m²) are added. The last layer is laid on fertile soil (turf mixed with humus, sand or sawdust in a ratio of 2: 2: 1).
The temperature regime of the greenhouse
Before planting, you should warm the soil - in the beds, make holes deep in the bayonet of a shovel and pour warm water into them. After the earth warms up, it needs to be loosened.
Before proceeding with the cultivation of cucumbers, you should familiarize yourself with the maximum and minimum acceptable temperature standards for this plant, as well as with methods of regulating the temperature. After all, it is this indicator that affects the growth and development of a vegetable crop, the quality of fruits, the development of diseases.
Recommended temperature standards for growing cucumbers are shown in the table:
When planting seedlings | + 20 ... + 22 ° C during the day, + 26 ... + 18 ° C at night |
In the flowering phase | + 25 ... + 28 ° С |
During the appearance of the fruit | + 20 ... + 30 ° С during the day, + 28 ... + 20 ° С at night |
At a temperature of + 15 ° С the plant slows down its growth, when it drops to + 10 ° С it stops it completely, below + 9 ° С it dies. Ovary formation does not occur if the thermometer indicates + 17 ... + 19 ° С or + 35 ... + 40 ° С. The soil should not warm up above + 18 ° С and cool below + 16 ° С.
Pest and Disease Control
To prevent the appearance of harmful insects and pathogens, after digging, the soil must be poured with a solution of potassium permanganate, treated with copper sulfate or Bordeaux fluid.
Did you know? The longest fruits are produced by Chinese varieties of cucumbers - up to 1.5 m long. They are first grown on the roofs of houses, and then moved to an open area, tied to supports. In Europe, such varieties are grown in greenhouses.
So, in a large-area greenhouse, you can grow not only cucumbers, but also other plants that are well compatible with them. This can be done by dividing the area into zones, making light partitions.
